How Having More Time Is Making Things Worse

I thought freeing up some hours in my week would be a blessing until I was cursed with being laid off.

If you had all the money you needed to sustain yourself and all the time to do whatever you want, what would you do?

This line, with some variation based on the pitchman or woman giving it, is the basis for every ‘entrepreneur’ program peddled on the internet.

It is so effective in bringing people in because it is an idea that lives deep down inside of all of us, but the reality of living in a world with mortgage lenders, credit card companies and orthodontist looking for their monthly installments makes I near impossible to act on.

Recently, I was laid off from my job in radio. My position was eliminated because of market conditions (low sales), and I was given a few months severance and a chance to come back on the weekend to clean my office.

I was technically given my freedom to do whatever I wanted. This means I had no restrictions on my small business interactions. No possible conflicts of interest in working with other media companies, or directly with clients of my former employer. Nothing holding me back from saying anything I wanted to say in a commentary in writing or podcasts.

I now have all the time I wanted to pursue whatever I wanted.

However, I only have a few months worth of ‘time’ paid to cover living expense.

Yes, I can now do more business with others as myself, but let’s go back to the idea of marketing the entrepreneurial lifestyle. It sounds wonderful to sit by the pool with your laptop and watch the cash flood in, but it doesn’t really work that way.

I don’t have the mechanism in place to live off my mall business immediately because I have been too busy making money for a corporation. Time I enjoyed spending making the corporation that left less time for the escape that was eventually supposed to be my own business.

I can spend all the time I want writing articles, but so far those articles haven’t sprung to life any new opportunities with my now free time, and I know there is laundry that needs to be done.
