The Three Flamingos

A Short Story (Part 3 of 6)

Adam and Levi were out of the camp and witnessed the explosions from a distance, outside of Auschwitz. Levi mourned and grieved, and Adam placed his arm around him, embracing him and offering his shoulder to cry on. They proceeded onward, and were on an empty highway, when they heard a truck approaching. They ran and hid behind the trees. It was a truck, delivering more Jewish people to the concentration camp. The truck stopped, the driver looking beyond the adjacent field and saw smoke, and smelled fumes emitting from the area. The passenger left the truck and accompanied the driver, speaking in German to each other. It sounded like they were wondering what kind of situation had occurred. Adam and Levi were huddled together behind a thick tree. Adam began to cough from his sickness, and the two Germans looked around. Levi held Adam’s mouth and reduced the sound as much as he could. The German in the back of the truck called out and said they had to get going. The two Nazi’s decided to let it go and continue on their way. Adam and Levi breathed a sigh of relief. It was morning and they hadn’t slept. They continued and Levi found a couple of blankets on a pile of leaves.

“Adam, look! We hit the jackpot it seems,” Levi said.

“Whoever this belonged to, were probably taken to the camp,” Adam said.

A blizzard occurred with the snow falling heavily, and Adam spotted a cave up ahead. Adam said, “Levi, I see a cave! Levi — ” and he turned around and saw Levi on the ground, his blanket over him.

Adam carried his friend to the cave. He set his body down and shook him to wake up.

Levi, with the little strength he had, “I think — I — will sleep for a — minute.”

“You need to sit up! Sit up!”

Adam hit Levi in the chest, and he reacted with surprise, and he sat up.

“What the hell! Alright, I’m just so hungry and thirsty — I think I will drink up the snow,” Levi said.

He went there slowly and was eating snowballs, and Adam joined him. While they were both eating snow, that and the grass they pulled from the ground, they sat there covered by the blankets. Their feet were together for warmth as they sat across from one another in the…
