The Biggest Hotel Robbery in History

Discover the Pierre Hotel robbery which resulted in a loss of three million dollars.

Many of Furnari’s crew of thieves were involved in the robbery. The Guinness Book of World Records later recognized this theft as the biggest and most influential hotel heist ever.

On the morning of January 2, 1972, at 3:50 a.m., the robbers reached the hotel. Since most visitors were deep asleep, their belongings, which had just been taken to New Year’s Eve celebrations the day before, were safely safeguarded in the hotel’s deposit boxes till the banks reopened the next morning. In addition, because it was a vacation, the hotel had a small staff.

Robert Comfort and Samuel Nalo, expert thieves who specialized in hotel operations, organized the robbery at the Pierre Hotel. They had earlier stolen jewels from the room of the famous Italian actress Sophia Loren at the Sherry Netherland Hotel.

In a black vehicle, the crew drove at the hotel’s 61st Street door and introduced themselves to the watchman as “Dr. Foster’s party.” Comfort had booked a room underneath the identity, Dr. Foster, after discovering that the hotel kept its doors shut at night.
