Chinese Immigrants Went To Utah In The 1800s

They worked on the transcontinental railroad

The railroad brought the United States together

Promontory Point is an area in northern Utah not far from Brigham City. The Golden Spike National Historic Site commemorates the spot where the transcontinental railroad came together to join the West and the East. A “golden spike” was placed in the railroad track to celebrate and signify the joining in 1869.

Working from the West in California were a lot of Chinese immigrant men. They had gone to California to try and gain some of the riches from the gold rush in what was called Gold Mountain. Stories of gaining riches from gold out of the mountain had drawn them there. Finding no work and no gold, many of the Chinese started to work for the railroad to lay the track through California and Nevada.

In telling some of the story of the Chinese immigrants who worked on the railroad, the play celebrates the immigrant spirit of the Chinese. It also brings in love and the self sacrifice of a team of immigrant workers.

The discovery of gold in California was initially the chief attraction for the Chinese coming to the United States. They expected to gain quick wealth. That was not to be so the immigrant men started to work for the railroad. The work was very difficult, and their dreams were unfulfilled.
