Shattering Memories in the Mountains

This sort of internal dialogue played out in my head repeatedly after I left the Army and moved to Queens, New York. The tension I felt nearly every second of the day built up and built up until one…

Happy 4th of July?

Today people in America are celebrating the 244th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. In the past I would have been celebrating with friends in Seattle or family in Tahoe. This year we drove to north County Dublin for Mexican food from a taco truck parked behind a farmhouse on a country road (and it was worth it).

A few days earlier we celebrated Canada Day (and Phase 3 of the reopening of the country, which allows indoor gatherings of up to 50 people) as we always do, with a party. The weather was unpleasant, Catherine can’t just drive a few hours to pick up Canadian staples and we don’t know any Canadians here. Still, we did the best we could. We invited the neighbours, friends from work and our political parties, and the cousins. Lyn from the Green party made a beautiful and delicious cake and we had enough people turn out to call it a (socially distanced) party.

Luckily, the previous government just stays in power while this is all being worked out (kinda like the time between the election and inauguration). And they did a great job in a difficult time (as our infection rates bear out).

Catherine is going back to work in a few weeks, teaching English as a Foreign Language online and I’m still at Novartis working on an interesting project. Aidan’s taking it easy, as one is supposed to during the pandemic. I look forward to schools opening and a touch more normality, though I doubt Aidan agrees with me.

And to my friends and family in the US who fear right-wing nut jobs using cars as weapons, police firing tear gas at peaceful protestors, and a killer virus while exercising their right to peaceably assemble and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances, Let’s be careful out there.
