Beacon of hope

Most parents only want a few things for their child — health, independence and above all, happiness. But what happens when a mother is told her son won’t have any of these? That he should be…

Your Greatest Investment

Every single person should invest. No, I’m not talking about buying shares of the all-powerful FAANG companies (that would be nice too). I’m talking about in yourself!

You are your greatest possession, and you should treat yourself as so.

Every day we are constantly bombarded with a never-ending wave of negativity thrown at us from the mass media, social media, and our peers. Over time this can do a number on our physical bodies and mental clarity. If we don’t recognize this and allow this to go on for an extended period without any interference, it can start to take a toll on our bodies, and eventually, health problems can start to migrate in.

Our bodies are our vessels, and just like a machine, we need to keep our bodies well lubricated to perform at optimal levels. Without proper nutrients and daily activity, it won’t function right. Things will stop working and it will eventually shut down.

The same thing can happen to our brains. We need rest to rejuvenate and recharge, and without proper rest stress, anxiety, and other delinquents will start to creep in and cloud our vision.

With the majority of jobs utilizing a computer, it’s easy to go the whole day sitting down only to get up for the occasional bathroom break or a cup of coffee. Then after a long day of work, we unwind on the sofa and watch some Netflix. If we don’t counteract this bad behavior with some daily activity, our bodies will begin to adapt to this sedentary lifestyle, and problems with posture and weight gain will pursue.

Doing something active for just 30 minutes a day combined with a healthy diet can counteract these negative effects of long days behind a computer. Combine all of this with stretching each day, and your body will be thanking you for years to come!

If you’re not too sure what to do for an activity, start with just walking around your neighborhood and go from there. Some activities that I like to partake in include lifting weights, running, biking, and playing basketball. There are a lot of options to choose from, so find something or a few things you enjoy and get active!

Just like your body, your brain needs proper care as well. With the majority of Americans only getting a few hours of sleep each night, it’s no wonder we have so many mental health issues. Add to this a poor diet, and we have a recipe for things like anxiety and stress.

Each day we are constantly utilizing our brain but many times we forget to give it adequate rest. Our brain needs time to relax and unwind, and sleep helps us do just that. Getting a proper nights rest consistently will reward you with more energy and better focus throughout the day.

This week challenge yourself to be more active, get more sleep and eat a more balanced diet. Focus on these three areas of your life and see how you start to feel. Try and notice any changes in your mood or your energy levels.

Start small and expand from there. Rome wasn’t built overnight, and neither are good habits. Experts say it takes about 21 days to form a good habit, so don’t get discouraged if you fail in the beginning.
