What is Net Zero?

When the amount of greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere equals the amount of gases removed from the atmosphere, the situation is called “net zero”.

How does “net zero” work?

In its most basic form, net zero refers to a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions that is as close to zero as possible, with any leftover emissions being reabsorbed from the environment, for example by seas and forests.

What makes net zero so crucial?

The science is unequivocal: to avoid the worst effects of climate change and preserve a habitable planet, the rise in global temperature must be limited to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

How is net zero possible?

The shift to a net-zero planet is one of the toughest challenges humanity has ever encountered.It calls for a profound transformation of how we produce, consume, and travel.

Currently, the energy industry is responsible for almost three-quarters of greenhouse gas emissions, and it also holds the key to averting the worst effects of climate change.If polluting coal, gas, and oil-fired power were replaced by electricity from renewable sources like wind or solar, carbon emissions would be decreased to a large extent.

Is there a collective global effort to reach net zero?

Yes, more countries, cities, businesses, and other organisations now pledge to reach net-zero emissions.A net-zero objective has been set by more than 70 countries, including China, the United States, and the European Union, who together account for almost 76% of global emissions.
